Office Furniture Care Guide

Veneer Care

General Care

- Keep your furniture out of direct sunlight. - Use desk pads and coasters to protect the surface from dents, scratches, and moisture from hot or cold liquids.
- If you choose to protect the surface with a glass top, use silicone bumpers or felt pads between the glass and wood surface.
- Use felt or leather pads on the bottom of office equipment and accessories used on the surfaces of you units.
- Do not use desk pads that have a plastic backing, as these can damage the surface.
- To avoid scratching the surface when moving objects on the desk, lift the object up and gently sent it back down. Do not pull or slide objects across the surface of the desk.
- Reposition office equipment and accessories periodically on the surface of the desk to ensure even coloration as the unit ages.

Cleaning Instructions

Do’s:
- For everyday cleaning, wipe the surface with a damp (not wet) cloth or sponge. It is important to wipe in the direction of the wood grain. Wipe dry with a clean, lint free cotton cloth.
- Windex or a similar product can also be used to clean the surface of your veneer furniture. This type of cleaner will not harm the finish and does not leave a residue. Apply cleaner to the surface and wipe in the direction of the wood grain. Wipe dry with a clean, lint free cotton cloth.
- To remove dirt and finger prints, use a mild cleaner such as Murphy’s Oil Soap. Dilute the cleaner as recommended by the manufacturer, dampen a soft cloth with the cleaner, and wipe in the direction of the wood grain. Wipe dry with a clean, lint free cotton cloth.
- For polishing, use a high quality liquid polish such as Guardsman Furniture Polish. Apply polish with a soft cloth as directed by the manufacturer. Always polish the unit in the direction of the wood grain.

Don’ts:
- Avoid wax based furniture polish cleaners such as Pledge and Endust. These products contain wax and silicone products that will build up on the surface. This build up will create a “cloudy” appearance on the finish of the unit.
- Avoid cleaning products that contain oils or are ammonia based.
- Do not wipe against the grain of the wood. Always wipe and polish with the wood grain.

LAMINATE CARE

Regular Cleaning:
- For everyday cleaning, wipe the surface with a damp cloth or sponge. You may use a mild soap or detergent. Wipe completely dry with a soft rag using a straight line motion.
- Wilsonart laminate may need occasional dusting depending on where it is used. To keep the surface beautiful, use a non-oily furniture spray. (Remember to clean the spray off several times a year to prevent buildup.)
- Furniture polish can also help to hide fine scratches in the surface. Be sure to completely wipe the polish from the laminate surface. The oils in the polish cannot penetrate the laminate and any residual polish could subject the users hands and clothing to stains.

Stains:
- Difficult stains such as coffee or tea can be removed using a mild soap or detergent and a soft bristled brush. Repeat as necessary.
- If a stain persists, use a paste of baking soda and water applied with a soft bristle brush. Light scrubbing for 10 to 20 strokes should remove most stains. Although baking soda is a low abrasive, excessive scrubbing or exerting too much force could damage the decorative surface, especially if it has a gloss finish.
- Stubborn stains that resist any of the above cleaning methods may require the use of undiluted household bleach or nail polish remover. Apply the bleach or nail polish remover to the stain and let stand no longer than two minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water and wipe dry. This step may be repeated if the stain appears to be going away and the color of the laminate has not been affected.
WARNING: Prolonged exposure of the laminate surface with bleach will cause discoloration.
- Always rinse laminate surfaces after cleaning! If a small amount of cleaning solution remains on the surface, moisture can reactivate it and result in permanently etched scars.

Special Care Tips:
- Keep your furniture out of direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure may cause the color to fade over time. Wilsonart laminates will maintain their normal coloration in indoor use within acceptable limits established by NEMA LD3-2000.
- Hot pans or heat producing appliances, when set directly on the laminate, can mar the product’s surface. Always use a heat shield, hot pad, or trivet.
- Sharp knives can damage the surface of the laminate lowering the wear and stain resistance of the surface. Always use a cutting board if cutting directly on the surface.
- Acidic or abrasive cleaners can damage laminate surfaces, do not use them to clean the surface. Avoid products that contain any of the following:
- Hydrocholoric Acid
     Muriatic Acid
     Hydrogen Chloride

- Sulfuric Acid
     Oleic Acid
     Oil of Vitriol
Oleum

- Hydrofluoric Acid
    Rust Remover
- Phosphoric Acid

- If you spill a product containing one of these chemicals on the surface, wipe up immediately, wash with soapy water, and rinse several times.
- To fill in scratches on wood grain laminates, use a touch-up “crayon”
. They are available in our 2009 Catalog.
