July is Security Awareness Month at OSS. Do you know the facts on FACTA?

FACTA, HIPAA, GLBA, what do they all mean? Unfortunately, document theft has become a growing problem for businesses. To protect your privacy, the government has passed laws for handling information, and more are on the way. Awareness of the problem and its ramifications and solutions is just smart business.

FACTA [Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act] New law requiring anyone retaining consumer information for business purposes to destroy the personal information before discarding it. GLBA [The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act] Requires banking and financial institutions across the United States to describe how they will protect the confidentiality and security of consumer information. HIPAA [Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act] Requires healthcare providers and hospitals to protect patients' privacy and to ensure the security of patient/client health data.

Improper disposal of important information can result in a security breach like the theft of intellectual property. In addition, there is a growing list of regulations that address information security, privacy and document retention that must be understood by businesses. Non-compliance can result in serious legal problems from violations. Who must comply?

  • You employ one or more people
  • Your business keeps personal information on file for customers or employees
  • Your business accepts credit cards for payment
  • You buy or sell products on the Internet
  • You do a credit check on an employee or potential customer

So what is the best way to protect your business? In a word: Shredders. Cross-cut document shredders provide the best protection for you and your business. For the highest level of security choose a Department of Defense rated Shredder. OSS offers a broad range of shredders designed for full compliance with today's regulations. Contact one of our professionals and let us show you how. Be sure to visit our web site for more shredder information.

  • TIPS FOR REDUCING TRAVEL-RELATED STRESS
  • Research has found that business travel can be very stressful for employees. But we didn't need any research to tell us that, did we? Business trips can increase our stress and we travel more and more every year as corporations become increasingly global. So whats so stressful about all this travel? There are three main factors that add to business travel stress: physical strains, inconveniences and barriers, and decreased productivity. The following tips are ways to help counter these factors and reduce travel-related stress.

The easiest factor to identify is the physical strains that occur during travel. In todays work world we are almost always attached to a computer. Rarely do we travel for business without a laptop. And we don't get away paperless, either. Some amount of files and documents must also be toted around during business trips. With todays increased airport security we are spending even more time traveling from the office to our destinations. The key to helping limit the strain on our bodies from all this lugging is ergonomics. Be as ergonomic as you can be. An ergonomic laptop carrying case can shift weight to the user's stronger, load-bearing muscles, effectively lightening the load and reducing muscle fatigue by up to 35 percent. There are three ergonomic carrying products that are designed to meet various styles. A Carrying Case, if you prefer a traditional over-the- shoulder strap laptop carrying case. A Roller Case, if you prefer the option of rolling your case through airports when possible. A Backpack, if you prefer to carry your laptop, peripherals, and paperwork on your back.

When we are taken out of our work and home offices we are taken out of our comfort zones. We have much less control on the road than we do in our comfort zones and because of that we have more barriers to our goals. One major way to reduce barriers while on the road is to be as wireless as possible. When you can't be wireless minimize as much as possible.

  • Editor's Journal - Charleston, S.C. it's more than a weekend adventure!
  • Magnolia Plantation

One of our favorite trips each year is to historic Charleston, SC. Charleston is one of those fortunate cities that literally has something everyone can enjoy. The USS Yorktown aircraft carrier is docked there, from Market Street to the waterfront to the beaches, the waterfront, aquariums, plantations and museums, there are so many historical homes and other places of interest there is no way I could ever mention all of them in this short column. The picture shown here is a snapshot I took on a recent trip to Magnolia Plantation. This Pre-Revolutionary War plantation has some of the oldest gardens (c.1680) in America. It is a wonderful place to take your family for a day's adventure and it's only 10 miles outside Charleston. There are numerous plantations and gardens and America's only commercial Tea farm, Charleston Tea Plantation all within a short drive from Charleston. Most of these attractions charge a small fee and many have guided tours.

Patriots Point has the U.S.S. Yorktown, the Laffey Destroyer, a Coast Guard cutter and a U.S. naval submarine docked and ready for your inspection. Wear good walking shoes while you're there and avoid flip-flops as they are a hazard while climbing all the narrow and often step stairs in the ships. While you're in the area don't forget about Fort Sumter National Monument. You can get there via ferry from Patriot's Point or by private vessel. If boating adventures excite you then you have arrived at the perfect place. If you're an experienced sailor you can rent a sailboat or motor boat of almost any size or you can charter a captain and sit back, relax and enjoy the peace of Charleston's waterfront as the wind and water splash your worries away.

If you enjoy fine dining and an abundance of menu choices, Charleston is calling you. Charleston has a wonderful selection of restaurants and a wide range of food choices to satisfy the most discerning palate. There is certainly a soon-to-be favorite food and restaurant awaiting your next visit. My family and I have made many trips to Charleston and we always find new places and attractions that make us look forward to our next trip. Plan an adventure with your family or make a romantic weekend getaway for two. Either way Charleston welcomes you with a hometown presence, a romantic carriage ride for two, and a smile that warms the heart. See you there!
