  • Recipe of the Month - Spicy Grilled Shrimp
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
1/2 cup finely chopped fresh basil
    4 garlic cloves, crushed
    2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
    1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons hot pepper sauce
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

36 uncooked large shrimp, peeled, deveined (about 2 pounds)

Whisk first 8 ingredients in small bowl.

Thread 6 shrimp onto each of six 10 to 12 inch-long metal skewers. (If you use wood skewers don't forget to soak them in water for at least an hour) Place skewers in 15x10x2 inch glass baking dish. Spoon all but 1/4 cup marinade over shrimp; turn to coat. Cover and chill shrimp and reserved 1/4 cup marinade at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours

Prepare grill (medium-high heat). Grill shrimp with some marinade still clinging until just opaque in center, about 2 1/2 minutes per side. Arrange skewers on platter. Spoon reserved 1/4 cup marinade over top and serve.

  • How To Earn Respect From Your Boss
  • mad boss

If you're having problems communicating with your boss or feel like you're being overlooked for choice assignments, you may have a problem "managing up," according to experts.

Managing up refers to the rapport you have with your immediate supervisor. Do you see eye-to-eye on most subjects or are you always at odds? Do you both share the same work ethic or are you at polar extremes?

If you're quite different in work style and personality from your boss, it could be that you are both parting ways before you even lay a subject on the table. To come to a meeting of the minds, experts suggest that employees take the time to tune into their supervisors management styles and personal objectives.

Know your manager's style. Does he or she like face-to-face meetings or emails? Is he or she up for some fun now and then or is it all-business? Knowing your manager's style and approach to the work at hand will put you on the same wavelength.

What are your manager's challenges? Is your supervisor vying for a new position? Is he or she under scrutiny to increase performance in his or her department? If your manager is getting pressure from the top to perform better, that pressure will transcend down the ranks, which means it is heading straight for you. If you know it's coming, you can be prepared to do what you can to make your manager look good. Performing at your peak will not only help out the department and make your manager look good, which he or she should appreciate, but you'll look good as well.

Be at the right place at the right time. Once you know what your manager has on his or her plate, you'll have an appreciation for timing. In other words, when your manager is under pressure to turn in a major proposal, don't barge into his or her office to ask for a raise.

How To Earn Respect From Your Boss...
  • Editor's Journal - The History of Memorial Day
  • waterloo NY

The story of Memorial Day begins in the summer of 1865, when a prominent local druggist, Henry C. Welles, mentioned to some of his friends at a social gathering that while praising the living veterans of the Civil War it would be well to remember the patriotic dead by placing flowers on their graves. Nothing resulted from this suggestion until he advanced the idea again the following spring to General John B. Murray. Murray, a civil war hero and intensely patriotic veteran, supported the idea wholeheartedly and marshalled veterans' support. Plans were developed for a more complete celebration by a local citizens' committee headed by Welles and Murray.

On May 5, 1866, the Village of Waterloo, NY was decorated with flags at half mast and draped with evergreens and mourning black. Veterans, civic societies and residents, led by General Murray, marched to the strains of martial music to the three village cemeteries. There impressive ceremonies were held and soldiers' graves decorated. One year later, on May 5, 1867, the ceremonies were repeated. In 1868, Waterloo joined with other communities in holding their observance on May 30th, in accordance with General Logan's orders. It has been held annually ever since.

Waterloo held the first formal, village wide, annual observance of a day dedicated to honoring the war dead. On March 7, 1966, the State of New York recognized Waterloo by a proclamation signed by Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller. This was followed by recognition from Congress of the United States when the House of Representatives and the Senate unanimously passed House Concurrent Resolution 587 on May 17th and May 19th, 1966 respectively. This reads in part as follows: "Resolved that the Congress of the United States, in recognition of the patriotic tradition set in motion one hundred years ago in the Village of Waterloo, NY, does hereby officially recognize Waterloo, New York as the birthplace of Memorial Day..."

On May 26, 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson, signed a Presidential Proclamation recognizing Waterloo as the Birthplace of Memorial Day. Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery each year with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Traditionally, the President or Vice President lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The occasion is also marked in almost every State on the last Monday in May.
